An innovative way to keep a step forward

Ideas underlying BIM are about 50 years old. The contemporary notion of BIM as Building Information Model is about 20 years old. BIM has transferred from the academic world to practice. BIM adaptation is a change proces that affects almost every aspect dealing with the Building & Construction Industry. Adaptation will only succeed if practice and academia keep cooperating on BIM. This presentation takes as starting point BIM 5 years ago (at the first BIM-Day), describes how developments in Academia have occurred in the past 5 years, and looks ahead to the next 5 years.

 

 

Henri Achten studied architecture at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (MSc. 1992), and completed his PhD there in 1997. He was assistant professor in the Design Systems Group on Design Theory and Computer Aided Architectural Design until 2010. Since 2005 he is working in the Cabinet of Architectural Modelling (better known as MOLAB) at the Faculty of Architecture of Czech Technical University in Prague. He was president of the European Association of Education and research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe) from 2005-2009. At CTU Prague, he leads the research program in MOLAB and is head of the Experimental Design Studio. His interest in BIM is informed from the designer’s point of view, focussing in particular on collaborative design and the potential of BIM to improve communication in the design process.
